COMMON QUESTIONS

Home Insurance Questions

Yes, standard homeowner's and renter's insurance include theft coverage. However, there are per-category limits for electronics, jewelry, and other valuables. For expensive items, our team recommends scheduling them separately for full replacement cost coverage.

Jewelry, watches, fine art, antiques, musical instruments, firearms, coin or stamp collections, and cameras often have sub-limits under standard policies. Scheduling (itemizing) these adds a small premium but ensures full coverage for their appraised value.

Items stolen from your car are typically covered under your homeowner's or renter's policy personal property section, not your auto policy. Auto insurance generally doesn't cover personal belongings inside your vehicle.

Off-premises coverage protects your belongings when they're stolen outside your home — from a hotel room, storage unit, your car, or even while traveling internationally. Most policies include this, but limits vary significantly.

Standard theft coverage does not automatically include identity theft recovery. However, many carriers offer identity theft protection endorsements that cover credit monitoring, legal fees, and recovery assistance — highly recommended.

Matt recommends creating a home inventory with photos, serial numbers, and receipts stored in the cloud. This dramatically speeds up the claims process and ensures you receive proper reimbursement for stolen items.
